Our skin is at the mercy of many forces as we age: sun, harsh weather and bad habits. But we can take steps to help our skin stay supple and radiant. How your skin ages depends on many things: your diet, lifestyle and heredity. For instance, smoking can produce free radicals--free radicals damage cells leading to premature wrinkles. As we grow older, our skin becomes rougher, can develop lesions i.e. benign tumors, it can become slack--loss of elasticity; it can become thinner and more fragile causing it to become more easily bruised. Changes below the skin are also more noticeable i.e. loss of fat below the skin in the cheeks, temples, chin, nose and eye area and may result in loosening skin causing a sunken eye look. Bone loss, usually around the mouth and chin begins in the 60's often causing a puckering of the skin around the mouth. Over time, the sun's UV rays damages elastin fibers in the skin causing it to sag, stretch and lose it's ability to snap back after stretching--so that tan may look great while you're young, you will pay for it later in life. There is nothing that can undo sun damage, although lasers can sometimes reverse some of the damage, they cannot remove all of it. You can delay some changes associated with ageing by staying out of the sun and making a habit of using sunscreen with zinc oxide as a physical blocker and an SPF of at least 30 and reapply frequently.
